What Is Tonsillitis And How Is It Treated?

Did you know that one of the most important organs that help fight off infection is known as tonsils? Tonsils are often overlooked when you open your mouth. This is because they are often small and hidden between the two arches.

How Tonsils Get Infected?

Tonsils can become clogged up with bacteria and food particles which can lead to problems. When this happens, the tonsil becomes infected and starts to get swollen due to inflammation resulting in the condition known as tonsillitis.

What Can Kind Of Food To Avoid?

When suffering from tonsillitis, avoid eating very hot foods as they can aggravate the inflammation. Also do not eat hard and dry foods like biscuits, toasts, cookies and raw vegetables as they can be difficult to swallow. It’s also best to avoid throat irritants like spicy foods, chilies, hot sauces, and peppers.

How To Treat Tonsillitis?

The treatment will differ depending on the cause. Tonsillitis are often caused by viruses, but occasionally by bacterias. Surgically removing the infected tonsils is called tonsillectomy and may be recommended in some cases. To help relieve the pain and discomfort, try the following:

• Paracetamol to help alleviate pain and fever

• Keep yourself hydrated

• Get plenty of rest

Sign And Symptoms:

Tonsillitis occurs mainly in children. A sore throat is the sign of a cold and may get better after a day or two. Other sign of illness such as a runny nose and congestion may follow a sore throat. The main symptom of tonsillitis is a moderate to a severe sore throat lasting longer than two days and involves inflammation of the tonsils. Other symptoms may include difficulty or painful swallowing, swollen glands in the neck, lymph nodes on the sides of the throat, high fever, bad breath, cough, and snoring due to enlarged tonsils blocking the airways.

Treatment:

A mild case of tonsillitis doesn’t necessarily require treatment; proper rest and remaining helps. But sometimes, the bacteria that can cause the strep throat brings about severe complications of rheumatic fever and kidney disease. These can be extremely painful, and if left untreated it can spread into the neck blocking the air passage and becoming a life-threatening complication. For this reason, it’s important to seek medical advice and treatment early on.
